Detroit Red Wings Trade for Jeff Petry, Son of a Detroit Legend

Steve Yzerman may have just fleeced another organization as he acquired defenseman Jeff Petry in a deal with the Montreal Canadiens.

The Wings get Petry from Montreal in exchange for defenseman Gustav Lindstrom and a 2025 conditional fourth-round pick. The Canadiens will retain 50% of the remaining obligations pertaining to his contract (Detroit is to pay 37.5% of the remaining contract)

Jeff is the son of Detroit Tigers legend and World Series champion Dan Petry. His father pitched in 35 games for the Tigers’ championship team in 1984. Petry won 18 games on the mound for Detroit in 84′. Dan Petry currently works for Bally Sports Detroit doing pre-game for Tigers ballgames. He occasionally makes appearances in the booth and is an analyst alongside play-by-play broadcaster Matt Shepherd.

Petry is a 35-year-old NHL veteran. He was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in December of 1987, three years after his Dad won a world series in Detroit. Petry has some career milestones in reach this season, as he could play in his 900th game and is just eight goals away from 100 in his career. Petry played in 61 games last season. He scored five goals and had 26 assists for a total of 31 points.

Final thoughts:

This was a fantastic trade for Steve Yzerman. Gustav Lindstrom wasn’t developing into an impactful player and was going back and forth between the AHL and NHL. Petry is a successful defenseman and is another veteran piece that could help push the Red Wings to the postseason. I love this trade, and it’s got me fired up for hockey season.
