Detroit Red Wings Unsigned Prospect Watch: Right Wingers

The Detroit Red Wings have numerous right wing prospects who remain unsigned. This is the final article in a series exploring the Red Wings’ unsigned prospects. Here is a look at the six right-wingers who have yet to sign a contract with the Red Wings.

Albin Grewe

Albin Grewe was drafted in the third round, 66th overall by Detroit in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. In 2020-2021, Grewe played 11 games in the AHL with Grand Rapids, chipping in with two assists. Last season, Grewe primarily played for Mora IK in the HockeyAllsvenskan. In 32 regular season games, he scored four goals, 13 assists, 17 points, and had a -2 rating. In eight playoff games, Grewe chipped in with five assists and had an even +/- rating. This season, Grewe will once again play in the HockeyAllsvenskan for Mora.

Ryan O’Reilly

Ryan O’Reilly was drafted in the fourth round, 98th overall by Detroit in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. Last season, O’Reilly was a sophomore at Arizona State University (NCAA). In 31 games, O’Reilly scored a career-high six goals, five assists, 11 points, and had a -9 rating. This season, he will return to Arizona for his junior season and play alongside fellow Red Wings draft pick Robert Mastrosimone.

Sam Stange

Sam Stange was drafted in the fourth round, 97th overall by Detroit in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Last season, Stange was a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin (NCAA). In 37 games, he scored four goals, seven assists, a career-high 11 points, and had a -11 rating. Stange will return to play his junior season at Wisconsin this year.

Ethan Phillips

Ethan Phillips was drafted in the fourth round, 97th overall by Detroit in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Last season, Phillips was a junior at Boston University (NCAA). In 28 games, he had career-highs in goals (6), assists (11), points (17), and a +4 rating. Phillips will play his senior year at Boston this year.

Kienan Draper

Kienan Draper was drafted in the seventh round, 187th overall by Detroit in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Last season, Draper played with Chilliwack in the BCHL. In 53 regular season games, he scored 23 goals, 27 assists, and 50 points. In 11 playoff games, he scored one goal, three assists, and four points. Draper will play his freshman year at the University of Michigan (NCAA) this year.

John Adams

John Adams will play his final season at Notre Dame (NCAA) this year

John Adams was drafted in the sixth round, 162nd overall by Detroit in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Last season, Adams transferred to the University of Notre Dame (NCAA). In 38 games, he scored six goals, ten assists, 16 points, and had a +6 rating. Now 25, Adams will play his final year of NCAA eligibility at Notre Dame this year.

Final Thoughts

The Detroit Red Wings own the rights to these six unsigned right-wingers until at least June 2023. A decision must be made on Adams, Phillips, and Grewe by next June. A decision must also be made on Stange and O’Reilly by June 2024. It will be interesting to see what right-wingers are signed by Detroit as there are far more players than contracts available in the Red Wings organization.
