ECHL: Adirondack Thunder Release Shawn Weller

The Adirondack Thunder have made some big headlines over the past few days as they announced that Shane Harper will be signing with the Thunder for the rest of the 2023-24 season yesterday, and today, they announced the release of Shawn Weller. The Glens Falls Native originally signed with the Thunder this off-season when he announced that he was signing with his hometown team for his final professional season however, Weller didn’t play in either of the preseason games for Adirondack and was placed on injured reserve to start the season before the Adirondack Thunder released a statement today regarding the release of the 37-year forward. Weller had spent the past two seasons with the Thunder since being traded from Kansas City; in that time, he put up 14 goals and 18 assists for 32 points throughout 73 games with the Thunder and has 50 goals and 77 assists for 127 points in 191 ECHL games.

Weller was not only a big part of the Thunder on the ice, but his impacts off the ice caught the eyes of the Glens Falls community and was one of the big spotlights for the Thunder during the Summer. Heading into the season with the unknown certainty of Shane Harper, Weller was one of the names that fans brought up as being named captain, which would have been fitting for his final season, especially being captain of his hometown team. It is unknown if Weller will call it a career or will find another team to finish out the season with is still unknown.
