ECHL: All-ECHL First and Second Teams Announced

The ECHL announced continued handing out awards on Thursday as they announced their All-ECHL First and Second teams. Yesterday, they announced the All-Rookie Team.

All-ECHL First Team

F-Brandon Hawkins (Toledo Walleye)– Brandon Hawkins has been named to the All-ECHL First Team for the third straight season. Hawkins, 30, is putting up impressive numbers for the Walleye as he has 37 goals and 52 assists for 89 points in 70 games. He’s been a huge part of the Walleye offense, as he has 31 more points than the second-leading point-getter for Toledo. Hawkins was named the ECHL MVP last season.

F- Peter Bates (Wichita Thunder)– Bates, 28, is one of two members of the Wichita Thunder to be named to the All-ECHL First Team. He has 27 goals and 49 assists for 76 points in 70 games, all career highs. His 76 points are tied for the team lead with Michal Stinil, who was named to the All-ECHL First Team. Bates is tied for first place this season with nine game-winning goals.

F- Michal Stinil (Wichita Thunder)– The work has finally paid off, as after having back-to-back seasons of 30 goals in 2022 and 23, Stinil has been named to the All-ECHL First Team. He has 25 goals and 51 assists for 76 points in 61 games. He leads the league in shootout goals (5). The Czech defenseman is second in the league in assists.

D-Kyle Mayhew (Fort Wayne Komets)– Mayhew, 27, has 11 goals and 41 assists for 52 points in 60 games this season. He leads all Komet defenders in goals (11), assists (41), and points (52). The Anaheim Hills, California, native has spent the last three weeks in the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors. In 11 games with the Condors, he has six assists. Mayhew was named to the All-ECHL Second team in his rookie year, where he had 15 goals and 42 assists. He’s been a big help to the Komets PP as he leads all defenseman with 27 PP points.

D-Derek Daschke (Utah Grizzlies)– There hasn’t been much to cheer about this year for the Utah Grizzlies, who sit 28th out of 29th place in the ECHL. Dashke, 28, has been a rare bright spot for the Grizzlies this season, putting up 16 goals and 38 assists for 54 points in 63 games. He’s just the second Grizzly to be named to the All-ECHL First Team, joining Charle-Edouard D’Astous (2021-22). Dashke leads Utah in points and will likely become the first defenseman in franchise history to lead the team in that category.

G- Cam Johnson (Florida Everblades)– It’s been a career year for Johnson as he’s put up an impressive 36-6-4 record with a 1.94 GAA, .920SV%, and five shutouts in 46 games. He’s on pace for a career year, as he’s already surpassed his win total from last year (27). Johnson leads the ECHL in GAA (1.94), which would be the second straight season he’s led the league. This is the first time the 30-year-old goaltender has been named to the All-ECHL First Team.

All-ECHL Second Team

F-Cade Borchardt (Kansas City Mavericks)– Borchardt, 26, has had an incredible sophomore year after putting up 24 goals and 53 assists for 77 points in 71 games during his rookie year. In just 57 games this season, the Burnsville, Minnesota native has 39 goals and 31 assists for 70 points. He’s just one goal shy of the Franchise record for goals in a season. Borchardt currently leads the ECHL in goals this season.

F-Sloan Stanick (Tahoe Knight Monsters)– Stanick has had an amazing rookie year, putting up 28 goals and 49 assists for 77 points. The 21-year-old forward leads the Knight Monsters in assists (49) and points (77). He’s one of the major pieces that helped Tahoe clinch a Kelly Cup Playoff Berth. Stanick was also named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team. The Rapid City, Manitoba native will certainly be a candidate for Rookie of the Year, and is currently the front-runner for the award.

F-Ryan Wagner (Rapid City Rush)– The 28-year-old forward is putting up impressive numbers as he has 28 goals and 49 assists for 77 points in 70 games this season. Wagner leads Rapid City in assists and points. He also came into the year taking on a big role by being named the captain of the Rush. The Park Ridge, Illinois, native had spent the previous four years at the AHL level with the Colorado Eagles and Chicago Wolves. In 94 career AHL games, he has 34 goals and 48 assists for 82 points.

D-Connor Welsh (Worcester Railers)– The 27-year-old defenseman has had a breakout year this season with the Railers, putting up eight goals and 48 assists for 56 points in 70 games. This is a career year for the Halifax, Nova Scotia native. Welsh leads all defensemen in the league in points (56). His 48 assists are the most in franchise history by a Railer.

D-Dennis Cesana (Savannah Ghost Pirates)– Cesana, 27, had spent most of his career with the Charlotte Checkers until this year. He has one goal and 14 assists for 15 points in 90 AHL games. In 52 games with Savannah this season, he had 14 goals and 36 assists for 50 points in 52 games. He led all Ghost Pirates defensemen in all offensive categories.

G- Luke Cavallin (Trois-Rivieres Lions)– The 23-year-old goaltender seems to play his best hockey when he gets more opportunities. In 32 games this season, Cavallin has posted a 19-10-2 record with a 2.13 GAA, .929 SV%, and three shutouts. He’s second among all goaltenders in GAA, and is tied for first in SV% with Taylor Gautheir of the Wheeling Nailers.
