Brandon Hawkins, forward for the Toledo Walleye, has once again earned the league’s highest individual honor, being named the Warrior Hockey ECHL Most Valuable Player for the 2024–25 season. This marks Hawkins’ second consecutive MVP award, placing him in elite company as just the second player in ECHL history to win back-to-back MVP honors, joining Chad Costello (2015–16, 2016–17).
A Record-Setting Season for Hawkins
Hawkins led the ECHL in scoring for the second straight year, posting an impressive 89 points over 71 games. His 37 goals ranked second in the league, while his 53 assists tied him for second. He topped all skaters in shots on goal with 336 and added 12 power-play goals—tied for second in that category. His seven game-winning goals also tied him for sixth league-wide.
Throughout the season, Hawkins was the engine behind Toledo’s offensive firepower. He tallied at least one point in 48 games and logged 28 multi-point performances, consistently delivering for the Walleye night after night.
Consistency and Impact
Beyond his point totals, it was Hawkins’ consistency and clutch performance that set him apart. His ability to rise in key moments earned him ECHL Player of the Month honors in January, and he was later named to the ECHL Midseason All-Star Team. His influence went beyond the stat sheet—serving as a leader on and off the ice for a Walleye team.
Three-Time All-ECHL First Team Selection
Hawkins’ MVP win capped a remarkable year in which he was also named to the All-ECHL First Team for the third consecutive season. His continued presence at the top of league scoring charts reflects both his elite skill and his tireless work ethic.
Hawkins Joins ECHL Elite
With this second straight MVP nod, Hawkins joins a very short list of legendary ECHL players. Chad Costello remains the only other player to earn MVP in back-to-back seasons. Hawkins’ consistent dominance and all-around impact solidify his legacy as one of the premier players in ECHL history.
MVP Voting Finalists
While Hawkins led the way, other standout performances this season came from goaltender Cam Johnson (Florida Everblades), who finished second in MVP voting, followed by Cade Borchardt (Kansas City Mavericks), Peter Bates (Wichita Thunder), and Eddie Matsushima (Bloomington Bison).
A Historic Honor
Hawkins now adds his name to a distinguished list of past MVP winners, including NHL alumni and ECHL legends. His place among them is not just earned—it’s undeniable. For the Toledo Walleye, for the fans, and for the league, Brandon Hawkins isn’t just valuable—he’s unforgettable.
Walleye Continue Kelly Cup Playoff Push Tonight
As Brandon Hawkins celebrates his second consecutive MVP title, the Toledo Walleye remain focused on their postseason mission. The team is currently competing in the 2025 Kelly Cup Playoffs and looks to carry momentum into Game 2 of the Central Division Semifinals.
In Game 1 of the Central Division Semifinals on April 17, 2025, the Toledo Walleye forward delivered a key power-play goal just over six minutes into the first period, helping lift Toledo to a 6–3 win over the Indy Fuel at the Huntington Center. His goal, assisted by Jalen Smereck and Trenton Bliss, gave the Walleye a 2–0 lead and momentum they would carry the rest of the way.
Hawkins registered five shots on goal and anchored a top line that created consistent offensive pressure. With physical play, smart positioning, and a composed finish on the man advantage, Hawkins once again proved why he’s one of the league’s most reliable scoring threats when it matters most. The win gave Toledo a 1–0 lead in the best-of-seven series as they continue their push for a Kelly Cup title.
The Walleye take on the Indy Fuel tonight, Friday, at 7:15 PM EDT at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio. With Hawkins leading the charge offensively, Toledo aims to build on their strong season and make a deep playoff run.
