ECHL Game Recap: Atlanta Gladiators vs Greenville Swamp Rabbits | 11/10/2024

The Atlanta Gladiators were gearing up to face the Greenville Swamp Rabbits for the second time in as many days. The Swamp Rabbits were eager to secure another shutout after defeating the Gladiators 3-0 on their home ice the previous night. However, with the backing of their home crowd, the Gladiators were determined to overcome their recent setbacks, showcase their resilience, and avoid a third consecutive shutout.

Period 1

Michael Marchesan made an early attempt, followed by Joe Cipollone, who took his own shot on goal. DeRidder successfully caught the effort from the Swamp Rabbits. The Gladiators are creating opportunities in front of the Swamp Rabbits’ goal, but Dryden McKay is stepping up with the crucial saves. DeRidder confidently snatches a shot from the Swamp Rabbits on the other end as Greenville makes another push on Atlanta’s net.

Denomie goes to the penalty box for high sticking (6:40), sending the Gladiators to the PK. PP goal made by Carter Savoie up over the right shoulder of DeRidder. Greenville takes the lead at 7:06, with Tate Singleton and Parker Berge on the assist. Savoie notably made six shots on net the night before, getting one goal and one assist for Greenville.

Two minute call for tripping will sending Ben Freeman sending the Gladiators on their first PP (9:53). Derek Topatigh takes the shot, but the puck soars wide and hits the netting. The Swamp Rabbits kill the penalty and we return to full strength. Patrick Moynihan’s shot was denied by the skate of a Gladiator. Tate Singleton (GRN) would later take and miss the shot on net, and the Gladiators worked to clear. Andrew Jarvis takes a shot at McKay, who catches it effortlessly with his glove. The Swamp Rabbits stand their ground, but the Gladiators put up a strong defense and ultimately manage to clear the zone. Rady Hernández makes contact with the puck, but the shot goes wide. We end the period, 1-0, in favor of Greenville.

Period 2

McKay makes a remarkable save on a powerful shot from Sylvester, who received a pass from Cipollone. Later, Cipollone has another opportunity, but McKay manages to deflect it with his stick, much to the disappointment of the crowd. Dylan Carabia is penalized for tripping and heads to the sin bin (1:53). Once the penalty is successfully killed, the Gladiators seize their opportunity for a power play when Savoie heads to the bench after the Swamp Rabbits are penalized for having too many players on the ice.

Jarvis fired and missed and then the Swamp Rabbits get another shot. Bryce Brodzinski get the goal with an assist by Max Coyle at 6:41, Greenville leads 2-0. McKay continued to keep the Gladiators locked out. Easton Armstrong had an opportunity but unfortunately missed. The Swamp Rabbits tried to incite some action mid-ice but the Gladiators don’t bit and the Swamp Rabbits lose a man, Mikael Robidoux, to the penalty box. Hausinger missed a shot as the Swamp Rabbits return from the penalty. Cranford pushed the puck along the ice, and after losing his hold on it, he forcefully slammed a Swamp Rabbit against the boards for added effect. Boyer heads to the penalty box, accompanied by Dru Krebs and Brodzinski. Krebs receives two penalties: one for roughing at 16:19 and another for cross-checking at 16:44. Later, Pederson also goes to the box for tripping at 18:57. As the period ends, we stand at a score of 2-0, Greenville with the lead.

Period 3

Boyer took a shot on goal, but McKay swiftly closed the pads, making a strong save on Boyer’s solid attempt. The Gladiators get another PP chance when Ben Freeman for tripping (4:01). Atlanta makes an immediate attempt with a shot from Sylvester, but McKay saves it once again. Pierson finally ends the drought for Atlanta with a powerful shot on the powerplay from the right circle that zips past McKay (5:52). Topatigh and Hanzel providing the assist.. The Gladiators get on the board, with Greenville still ahead by one goal. A heated discussion erupted behind the net following a flurry of activity out front just moments earlier, as Atlanta attempted to force the puck past McKay.

The Swamp Rabbits capitalize on a steal as the Gladiators attempt to clear the puck, but DeRidder is there to make the glove save. Following that, we proceed to the penalty kills for Atlanta, which provides a two-man advantage to Greenville as Gladiators’ Datema (11:00) and Carabia (11:02) both receive penalties for tripping. A big PK coming for Atlanta here. They stay on front of the net, guarding DeRidder, and return to full strength after a huge kill on those penalties. We have a holding call, this time on Greenville’s Robidoux (13:53). They too made the kill on the penalty. Brodzinski made a shot on DeRidder but it goes wide. Atlanta takes a time out. We resumed play, with Atlanta trying to get the puck past McKay to tie the game but as the clock wound down the Swamp Rabbits would take the game away from the Gladiators, with a final score of 2-1.
