ECHL Game Recap: Wheeling Nailers vs Adirondack Thunder | 03/07/2025

Dakota Gilbert/Adirondack Thunder

The Adirondack Thunder returned home for a three-in-three against the Wheeling Nailers after a grueling 14-day road trip in which the Thunder went 2-5-1, with one of those wins coming against the Nailers. Things went from bad to worse for the Thunder, roster-wise, as Tyler Brennan is sick and is expected to be out all weekend, and Dylan Wendt would be recalled to Utica less than 24 hours after being sent down to Adirondack. Kishaun Gervias got the crowd of 5,000 going less than two minutes into the game after he dropped the gloves with Wheeling’s Cole Tymkin. Both teams would have their chances in the first, but neither could find the back of the net. However, the Nailers outplayed and outshot the Thunder 15-6 in the opening frame, but thanks to Jeremy Brodeur, we’d be scoreless after 20.

“Ya, especially with what these guys just went through, i’m surprised we don’t have more injuries then we do, these guys battled. We played really well on the entire road trip and to be honest I think that was our worst game we played out of the last eight tonight but we still played pretty well. I’d like to limit some of the mistakes with the puck on your stick but super resilient all night”

In the second, it would start to even out as both teams would continue to have Grade A opportunities, but Taylor Gautheir and Jeremy Brodeur would combine for 25 saves in the second period to keep the game scoreless. It would be the first time all season that Wheeling went into the third period of a game scoreless. In the third, Adirondack would get three chances on the PP but couldn’t convert as they came into the game having the 27th-ranked PP in the league (14.3%). Wheeling would have nine shots on goal in the third period but none better than a short-handed break-away chance by Logan Pietila with 30 seconds left in the third, but Jeremy Brodeur would make his 34th and final save of the night to send the Thunder into OT. Adirondack would get a two-one-one less than two minutes into the OT Andre Ghantous would feed Greg Smith who found the back of the net for his fourth of the season and first on home ice as the Thunder took home the 1-0 victory.

“Awesome. I had a good time up there but also really happy to be here. Playing some meaningful games down the road, hopefully, it’s a good step to what we are working to and hopefully we can replicate that tomorrow”

Jeremy Brodeur picks up his eight win of the season and his second shutout of the season stopping all 34 shots he saw. On the other end of the ice, Taylor Gauthier would make 28 saves but would lose his second straight game after stopping 28 shots last Sunday in a shootout loss to the Maine Mariners. Adirondack and Wheeling will meet for the second game of a three-in-three later today at 7pm.
