ECHL Game Recap: Wheeling Nailers vs Adirondack Thunder |03/08/2025

Brennan Dowd/Adirondack Thunder

The Adirondack Thunder and Wheeling Nailers met for the second game of a three-game set on Saturday Night as it was Country Night in Glens Falls. Adirondack wasted no time getting on the board as Dylan Wendt fed Greg Smith to give Thunder a 1-0 lead less than two minutes in. Jeremy Brodeur, coming off a shutout on Friday Night, would do everything he could to keep the Thunder in the game, but Cole Cameron and Cole Tymkin both found the back of the net as the Nailer held a 2-1 lead and outshot the Thunder 16-6 in the opening 20.

“He kept us in the game all game and he stood on his head both games and we obviously love having him we’re so confident playing in front of him when he’s back there. He’s such a leader too whether he’s in the net or in the locker room he’s such a common presense as well”

Ryan Wheeler on the impact of Jeremy Brodeur

Kishaun Gervais would try to regain momentum as he’d drop the gloves with Cole Tymkin just seven seconds into the middle frame. Unfortunately, the momentum would favor the Nailers as Matty De St. Phalle would score his 18th of the season at the 2:14 mark of the middle frame. Less than five minutes later, Louie Roehl would send a stretch pass to Kyle Jackson, who buried his 25th of the season to give Wheeling a commanding 4-1 lead. The Thunder would make it a game as Ryan Wheeler beat Jaxon Castor shoulder side on the PP to cut the lead to two. With less than two minutes left in the period, Matty De St. Phalle would send Gabe Klassen on a breakaway as he’d beat Jeremy Brodeur with less than two minutes left in the second. That goal seemed to be the breaking point for Darian Skoech, who would go after the Nailers during their celebration and would take an unsportsmanlike penalty to put the Thunder short-handed.

No, I thought we were phycial enough. I thought we didn’t make good puck choices and when you feed a team like the way we fed them you get tired and physcially and obviously mentally and it’s a double-edged sword. So physically fine, puck choice, not so much

Head Coach Pete MacArthur if he had any issues with the phyciallity tonight

Early in the third, it appeared as if Louie Roehl’s shot from the point had given the Nailers a 6-2 lead, but it would be called back for goalie interference. The called-off goal didn’t affect Wheeling as they would get on the board shortly after as Cole Tymkin finished off the Gordie Howe Hat-Trick feeding Matt Koopman on a two-on-one. The Thunder managed to pick up another PP goal as Jackson van de Leest ripped a shot from the point, beating Castor, and then Isaiah Fox would tip-in his first pro goal in the final minute to make it a two-goal game. It wouldn’t be over yet as the Thunder still has some resentment left as Ryan Wheeler and Sean Gulka would each be hit with 10-minute misconducts in the final 12 seconds of the game. Jaxon Castor would make 23 saves in a much-needed victory after losing three of his previous four starts coming into the night. Adirondack and Wheeling will meet tomorrow afternoon for the fifth and final time to decide on the season series.
