ECHL: Jay Powell Signs with the Solar Bears

The Orlando Solar Bears announced this afternoon that Jay Powell has agreed to terms and is re-signing for the 2023-24 year. Jay Powell will be playing his first full season with the Solar Bears. Last season, Powell came to Orlando from the Kansas City Mavericks in March. That trade earned Orlando future considerations from the Mavericks in exchange for forward Mathieu Foget.

The 6-foot-7 Nashville, Tennessee native has played 37 ECHL games between the Orlando Solar Bears, Rapid City Rush, and Kansas City Mavericks. The defenseman played collegiate hockey for Concordia University-Wisconsin and the University of Alabama-Huntsville from 2020-2022. Powell scored three goals in his 11 games between the two schools and was not afraid to go to the penalty box for 36 minutes total. From 2012-2017, Powell played for Westminister Prep for 89 games. Powell played junior hockey for the Minnesota Wilderness of the NAHL and, during the 2017-2018 season, the Carleton Place Canadians in the CCHL.
