ECHL: Kansas City Mavericks Sign 6’7″ Defenseman From Nashville, Tennessee

The Kansas City Mavericks have announced that they have signed defenseman Jay Powell for the 2024-25 ECHL season.

Collegiate Career

Jay Powell started his collegiate career playing Division III at the University of Alabama-Huntsville in the 2018-19 season. Powell played in six games with Huntsville, where he scored one goal and three assists for four points, with 30 penalty minutes. Powell then joined Huntsville’s Division I team for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 season, although he did not play in any games in the 2019-20 season. Powell played in a total of two games at the Division I level, where he did not have any points and had two penalty minutes and a plus/minus of 0.

Powell then spent his final collegiate season playing Division III hockey at Concordia University Wisconsin. He played in nine games where he had three goals and zero assists for three points. He had 24 penalty minutes and a plus/minus of -2.

Professional Career

After completing his collegiate career, Powell joined the Huntsville Havoc to finish his 2021-22 season. He played in 16 games in Huntsville where he had zero goals and three assists for three points. He had 12 penalty minutes and a plus/minus of +3. Powell was called up to the Rapid City Rush in the ECHL where he got to play in two games but did not register any points. He had two penalty minutes and a plus/minus of +2.

In the 2022-23 season, Powell started his season in the SPHL with the Pensacola Ice Flyers, playing in 21 games where he had two goals and four assists for six points. He had 33 penalty minutes and a plus/minus of +7. Powell also got to spend some time in the ECHL on callups with the Kansas City Mavericks and Orlando Solar Bears. He played in a total of 37 games in the ECHL, where he had two goals and one assist for three points. He had 48 penalty minutes and a plus/minus of 0.

Powell then got to spend the entire 2023-24 season in the ECHL with the Atlanta Gladiators playing in 35 games where he had two goals and two assists for four points. He had 54 penalty minutes and a plus/minus of -10.

The 2024-25 season will be Powell’s second stint with the Kansas City Mavericks after briefly joining them in the 2022-23 season. In the 2022-23 season with the Mavericks, Powell played in 29 games where he had one goal and one assist for two points. He had 25 penalty minutes and a plus/minus of 0.
