The Roster

Five Players to Watch

C – Nate Danielson

Danielson was drafted by the Red Wings with the ninth overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. He spent last season playing for the Brandon Wheat Kings playing in 26 games recording 26 points on 12 goals, and 14 assists, and he was a plus six. He was then traded to the Portland Winterhawks where he played in 28 games recording 41 points on 12 goals, 19 assists, and was a plus 20. Once the Western Hockey League’s season ended he joined the Red Wings AHL affiliate the Grand Rapids Griffins and in two games in the playoffs, he failed to record a point and was a minus one. Danielson will likely start the season with Grand Rapids but if he has a season like he did the Winterhawks he’ll force his way in the Red Wings lineup in 2024-25.

LW – Alexandre Doucet

Doucet was undrafted but signed a deal with the Red Wings. Last season he played for the Red Wings ECHL affiliate the Toledo Walleye playing in 52 games he recorded 41 points on 19 goals, and 22 assists and was a plus 19, in the playoffs he played in 14 games he recorded six points on a goal and five assists, he was a plus/minus of zero. He also appeared in the AHL with Grand Rapids playing in six games, he didn’t register a point and was a minus-two. Doucet is looking to make his way to a full season in Grand Rapids and barring any injuries join the Red Wings, but he may be a more likely candidate to see in 2025-26 or 2026-27.

RW – Michael Brandsegg-Nygard

Brandsegg-Nygard was drafted 15th overall in this past draft, last season he played for Mora IK in 41 games he recorded 18 points on eight goals and ten assists and was a plus three. In the qualification round, he played in 12 games recording ten points on four goals and six assists, and was a plus-one. He would play for Norway in the World Juniors playing in five games recording five points on three goals and two assists and was plus one. This season he’s been playing for Norway in International play and in five games he has five points on four goals and an assist as well as being a plus-three. Brandsegg-Nygard will be watched in this tournament as Red Wings fans will look to see if they got a steal in the draft and someone who can join them relatively soon and help them in the future.

D – Shai Buium

Buium was drafted 36th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft. He spent last season with the University of Denver as he helped lead them to a National Championship win, in 43 games he had 36 points on seven goals and 29 assists and finished as a plus 33. In the Tournament he had two points both coming on assists and one of those was in the National Championship. He also played for Grand Rapids in one game but didn’t record a point. Buium is a 6’3” 220 lbs defenseman who will likely be in Grand Rapids this season but if an injury occurs could join the Red Wings this season.

G – Carter Gylander

Gylander was drafted 191st overall in the 2019 NHL Draft by Detroit. Last season, at Colgate he played in 32 games going 14-14-4 with a 2.93 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage, he finished his college career going 46-46-13. He will likely be in Grand Rapids just like most of the guys and he’ll be sharing a net with Sebastian Cossa who we know is the Red Wings’ future starting goalie but it’ll be interesting to see what Gylander could do as a backup even with the idea of Trey Augustine coming in a few seasons.
