Game Recap: Dallas Stars at San Jose Sharks | 03/05/2024

The Dallas Stars were in the Bay Area to take on the San Jose Sharks in the second game of the home-and-home series. Roope Hintz lifted the Stars past the Sharks 7-6 in overtime at SAP Center on Tuesday night. Dallas improved to 38-17-9, while San Jose fell to 15-39-7.

The Stars’ starting lineup featured Chris Tanev, Esa Lindell, Joe Pavelski, Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson, and Jake Oettinger. Oettinger made 14 saves for a win. Meanwhile, Sharks backup goalie Kaapo Kahkonen made a whopping 34 saves in a losing effort. Both goalies worked hard to protect their respective nets.

The Stars got off on the wrong foot in the first period. Miro Heiskanen was called for tripping against Givani Smith at 3:06. Anthony Duclair capitalized on the man advantage with a snap shot into the Stars’ net for an early 1-0 lead at 3:22. Fabian Zetterlund and William Eklund collected the assists on Duclair’s 15th of the season.

To make matters worse, Dallas’ script went off the rails when Fabian Zetterlund unleashed a snap shot to double the Sharks’ lead to 2-0 at 12:04. Anthony Duclair and Jan Rutta collected the assists on Zetterlund’s 16th of the season.

But the Stars appeared calm amidst the storm. Kyle Burroughs was called for hooking against Logan Stankoven at 18:30. Jamie Benn won the faceoff, capitalized on the man advantage with a deflected shot, and cut the Sharks’ lead in half, 2-1, at 18:38.

The Stars added a second consecutive power-play goal. Mikael Granlund was called for tripping against Logan Stankoven at 18:47. Stankoven capitalized on the man advantage with a wrist shot into the Sharks’ net to tie the game, 2-2, at 19:27. Miro Heiskanen and Wyatt Johnston collected the assists on Stankoven’s fourth of the season.

The game was tied 2-2 at the end of the first period. Dallas outshot San Jose 20-7 after 20 minutes.

The Sharks regained the lead to open the second-period scoring. Ryan Carpenter put a wrist shot into a vacant Stars net to lift the Sharks 3-2 at 4:39. Nico Sturm and Marc Edouard-Vlasic collected the assists on Carpenter’s fourth of the season.

Once again, Dallas tied the game. Wyatt Johnston fired a wrist shot into the Sharks’ net to tie the game 3-3 at 8:48. Jamie Benn and Ty Dellandrea collected the assists on Johnston’s 20th of the season.

And, once again, San Jose regained the lead. Anthony Duclair fired a wrist shot into the Stars’ net to help the Sharks get ahead 4-3 at 15:48. Fabian Zetterlund and Mikael Granlund collected the assists on Duclair’s 16th of the season and second of the game.

The Sharks scored an insurance goal. Filip Zadina blasted a snap shot to put the Sharks up 5-3 at 17:50. Mike Hoffman and Calen Addison collected the assists on Zadina’s tenth of the season.

The Stars trailed the Sharks 5-3 at the end of two periods. Dallas outshot San Jose 25-14 through 40 minutes.

The Sharks wasted little time in scoring a third-period goal. Mikael Granlund fired a wrist shot into the Stars’ net to extend the Sharks’ lead to 6-3 at 3:02. Anthony Duclair collected the lone assist on Granlund’s ninth of the season.

The Stars made it a two-goal game. Logan Stankoven blasted a snap shot past Kaapo Kahkonen to reduce the Sharks’ lead to 6-4 at 12:58. Wyatt Johnston collected the lone assist on Stankoven’s fifth of the season and second of the game.

The Stars made it a one-goal game. Wyatt Johnston fired a wrist shot past Kaapo Kahkonen to cut the Sharks’ lead to 6-5 at 13:41. Logan Stankoven and Jamie Benn collected the assists on Johnston’s 21st of the season and second of the game.

Wyatt Johnston not only tied the game 6-6 at 15:42 with a wrist shot goal but also had a hat trick. Miro Heiskanen and Jamie Benn collected the assists on Johnston’s 22nd of the season and third of the game.

The game was tied 6-6 at the end of regulation. Dallas outshot San Jose 39-20 after a full 60 minutes.

The game went into overtime. Roope Hintz scored the game-winning goal on a wrist shot and lifted the Stars 7-6 over the Sharks. Dallas outshot 41-20 after about 62 minutes.
