NHL Game Preview: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. New Jersey Devils | 04/09/2024

Newark, NJ – The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing off against the New Jersey Devils tonight as the Leafs are on the second night of a back-to-back. The Leafs won 3-2 in overtime last night and traveled to New Jersey for tonight’s game. The Devils’ playoff outlook is looking bleak, but they aren’t eliminated yet, so tonight is a must-win game for them, while the Leafs are 3 points back of the Florida Panthers with a game in hand, so tonight is still an important game for the team.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Last Meeting:

The Leafs and Devils last faced off on March 26th, in what turned out to be a 6-3 win for the Devils. The Devils played a more complete game than the Leafs and led after each period. The Leafs will look to flip the script tonight and outplay the Devils while on the second end of their back-to-back. The team will need to shut down the offense of the Devils and Woll as the likely starter will need to let in less than the 5 goals he let in last time the Leafs and Devils faced off (the 6th goal was an empty netter).

LEAFS QUICK LOOK (45-23-9)

3rd in the Atlantic, 10th in the NHL

Leafs to Keep an Eye on:

  • Auston Matthews scored his 65th goal of the season last night and is now tied for the most goals in a single season this century. Matthews will look to continue helping his team win games tonight whether that comes with a goal or not, but with 10 goals in his last 10 games, Matthews is hot and may break that record tonight.
  • Jake McCabe scored the overtime winner last night and has shown what the Leafs wanted from him since acquiring him much more often as of late. McCabe has hit a new level playing on the right side and has defended well while having flashes of offense. McCabe will look to keep playing an effective game in tonight’s battle against the Devils.
  • Morgan Rielly has had a slow start since returning from his injury. Rielly was a major contributor in last year’s playoffs and will look to be an important aspect this year as well. Look for Rielly to try and build some momentum to close off the season and build into playoffs as he looks to up his offensive numbers while not giving up too much defensively.
