NHL Game Recap: Dallas Stars vs. Edmonton Oilers Recap | 02/17/2024

The Dallas Stars returned home to host the Edmonton Oilers in a Saturday matinee game on ABC. The Stars fell 4-3 to the Oilers in overtime at the American Airlines Center. Dallas fell to 34-14-7, while Edmonton improved to 32-18-1.

Oilers backup goaltender Calvin Pickard made 24 saves for a win.

Stars fans who arrived early received exclusive Wyatt Johnston Youth jerseys for Kids Day. Also, Stars fans stopped by the Fan Center to buy a Stars Alumni mystery puck and meet former Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen, who played in Dallas from 2009 to 2018.

The Stars’ starting lineup featured Ryan Suter, Tyler Seguin, Mason Marchment, Matt Duchene, Joel Hanley, and Jake Oettinger. Oettinger made 20 saves in a losing effort.

The first period saw two high-sticking penalties, one for each team. Roope Hintz was called for high-sticking against Oilers captain Connor McDavid at 9:00, while Brett Kulak was penalized for high-sticking against Stars alternate captain Joe Pavelski at 19:22.

Both teams settled for a scoreless tie at the end of the first period. In addition, 1:22 of the 4-on-5 Stars power play carried over into the second period. Edmonton edged Dallas in shots, 7-6, after 20 minutes.

The Stars finally got on the board in the second period. Mason Marchment ripped a slap shot into the Oilers’ net for a power-play goal and a 1-0 lead at 1:08. Wyatt Johnston and Matt Duchene collected the assists on Marchment’s 18th of the season.

The Stars’ lead was short-lived as the Oilers quickly tied the game at one apiece. Evan Bouchard fired a wrist shot into the Stars’ net to tie the game 1-1 at 2:03. Mattias Ekholm and Corey Perry collected the assists on Bouchard’s 13th of the season.

The Stars regained the lead in little time. Thomas Harley fired a wrist shot into the Oilers’ net to make it a 2-1 game at 4:47. Matt Duchene and Miro Heiskanen collected the assists on Harley’s 14th of the season.

The Oilers tied the game again. Corey Perry tipped in a shot to tie the game 2-2 at 6:55. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl collected the assists on Perry’s sixth of the season.

The Oilers regained the lead. Derek Ryan ripped a slap shot for a short-handed goal and a 3-2 lead at 18:42. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins collected the lone assist on Ryan’s fifth of the season.

The Stars tied the game to end regulation. Matt Duchene scored a power-play goal on a backhand shot to tie the game 3-3 at 19:02. Mason Marchment and Thomas Harley collected the assists on Duchene’s 22nd of the season.

The game was tied, 3-3, at the end of two periods. Dallas outshot Edmonton 22-17 through 40 minutes.

There were no scoring plays or penalties in the third period. The game remained in a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation, which forced overtime. Dallas outshot Edmonton 27-23 after 60 minutes.

Evan Bouchard capitalized on the man advantage with a wrist shot for a power-play goal and a game-winning goal to lift the Oilers to a 4-3 win over the Stars just 30 seconds into overtime. Leon Draisaitl collected the lone assist on Bouchard’s 14th of the season and second of the day. Dallas outshot Edmonton 27-24 after about 61 minutes.

Injury Update
After the second period, Dallas reported Jani Hakanpää sustained a lower-body injury and did not return.
