Oilers give head coach Jay Woodcroft three-year extension

The era of Jay Woodcroft will remain with the Edmonton Oilers.

The 45-year-old head coach will remain with the team after signing a three-year extension, a deal which was announced on Tuesday.

Woodcroft replaced Dave Tippett, who was fired as head coach of the Oilers on Feb. 10, after the team had won just seven of its last 23 games and was five points behind the second wildcard spot in the Western Conference.

Woodcroft subsequently led the Oilers to a second-place finish in the Pacific Division and the Western Conference Final before they were eventually swept by the Colorado Avalanche.

Prior to his tutelage with the Oilers, Woodcroft was behind the bench with the team’s AHL affiliate in Bakersfield, California, where he led the Condors to the AHL championship a season ago.

The Toronto native was also a video coach with the Detroit Red Wings and an assistant coach with the San Jose Sharks and the Oilers.
