Pittsburgh Penguins Trade Michael Bunting to Nashville for Two Players and a Pick  

Michael Bunting Undergoes Surgery

Two teams having down seasons have made a trade this evening. The Pittsburgh Penguins are sending forward Michael Bunting to Nashville in exchange for forward Tommy Novak, defenseman Luke Schenn and a fourth round pick in 2026. Bunting is out after having his appendix removed. The Penguins are still in the playoff race but barely hanging on as they entered tonight eight points back of the final wild-card spot.

Michael Bunting 

Bunting is in his sixth season having spent time with four teams, the Arizona CoyotesToronto Maple LeafsCarolina Hurricanes, and Penguins. Bunting spent his first two seasons in Arizona, he played in 26 games recording 14 points on 11 goals and three assists, he was a minus-one. He also recorded three power-play goals. Bunting then signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In two seasons he played in 161 games recording 112 points on 46 goals and 66 assists. He was a +48 and had 15 power-play points, he finished third in Calder Trophy voting in 2021-22.

In 2023 he signed with the Carolina Hurricanes, he played in 60 games recording 36 points on 13 goals and 23 assists. He was a -15 and had 16 power-play points. The Penguins then acquired Bunting during the 2023-24 season. He played in 21 games recording 19 points on six goals and 13 assists. He was a minus-four and had five power-play points. This season in 58 games he has 29 points on 14 goals and 15 assists. He is a -18 and has 15 power-play points.

Tommy Novak

Novak is in his fourth season, all spent with Nashville. The Predators drafted him 85th overall in 2015. In 201 games he has 117 points on 49 goals and 68 assists. This season in 52 games he has 22 points on 13 goals and nine assists. 

Luke Schenn

Schenn is in his 17th season having spent time with Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Arizona, Anaheim, Tampa Bay, Nashville, and two stints in Toronto and Vancouver. In 1,057 games he has 203 points on 44 goals and 159 assists. He’s a career -46, has 1,586 blocked shots, and 3,586 hits. This season in 61 games he has five points on a goal and four assists. He’s a minus-nine, has 76 blocked shots, and 228 hits.
