Casey Mittelstadt was born in Edina, Minnesota, on November 22, 1998. The left-shooting forward has a brother, John, a forward at the University of Minnesota, and another brother, Luke, a Golden Gopher and a seventh-round draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens in 2023.

Casey played three seasons of high school hockey at Eden Prairie High School in Minnesota from 2014 to 2017, totaling 63 goals and 105 assists in 75 games. After the 2016-17 season, Mittelstadt was named United High School Hockey Player of the Year and Mr. Hockey in Minnesota as the state’s top performer. Mittelstadt was a Team USA’s U18 team member in the World Junior Championships in 2016 and scored four goals and collected five assists in seven games as the US won the Bronze Medal.

Mittelstadt joined the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League for a portion of the 2016-17 season after being selected fifth overall in the USHL’s Futures Draft in 2014. He registered 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 games with Green Bay and then committed to the University of Minnesota for the 2017-18 season.

The Buffalo Sabres Drafted Casey Mittelstadt in the First Round of the 2017 NHL Draft

Mittelstadt was drafted eighth overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2017 NHL Draft. After one season at the University of Minnesota and an All-Rookie Big Ten Selection, Mittelstadt signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Sabres on March 26, 2018, worth $2.78 million. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound center played for the U20 US Team in the 2018 World Junior Championships, scoring four goals with seven assists, and was named the tournament’s best forward.

Casey Mittelstadt’s NHL Debut to Today

Mittelstadt made his NHL debut on March 29, 2018, against the Detroit Red Wings, and collected an assist in 12:53 of ice time. He scored his first NHL goal on April 6, 2018, against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Over six games in his first season, he scored one goal and added six assists. In his first full season with Buffalo, Mittelstadt scored 12 goals and added 13 assists in 77 regular season games.

On March 6, 2024, Mittelstadt was traded to the Colorado Avalanche for Bowen Byram and ended his tenure with the Sabres with 62 goals and 124 assists in 339 games. Mittelstadt played 81 total regular season games with Colorado and tallied 15 goals and 29 assists before being dealt to the Boston Bruins on March 7, 2025. As of March 10, 2025, Mittelstadt has two years remaining on his contract with a salary cap hit of $5.75 million and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2025-26 season.
