Player Profile: Marat Khusnutdinov

Marat Khusnutdinov was born on July 17, 2002 in Moskva, Russia. The undersized winger played for the Vityaz Podolsk U16 team during the 2017-18 season and contributed eight goals and 34 assists in 25 games and was a part of the Russian U16 championship team. Khusnutdinov was the captain of the Russian U16 team in international play and scored nine goals with eight assists in 19 games.

The next season, Khusnutdinov played with the U17 team and scored eight goals and ten assists, and registered a goal and two assists with the U18 at the end of the season before totaling four goals and six assists in seven playoff games. Khusnutdinov had another strong season in international play and competed in the U18 World Junior Championship, where Russia earned a Silver Medal.

In 2019, Khusnutdinov was the eighth overall pick in the first round of the Ontario Hockey League Import Draft by the Erie Otters. Instead, the scrappy forward joined the SKA-1946 St. Petersburg team in the MHL and tallied 13 goals with 25 assists in 44 games. Khusnutdinov had three assists and won the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in 2020. He spent three seasons in the KHL with SKA St. Petersburg and HK Sochi and totaled 22 goals and 51 assists in 144 games.

The Minnesota Wild Drafted Marat Khusnutdinov in the Second Round of the 2020 NHL Draft

Khusnutdinov was selected 37th overall in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Minnesota Wild. Elite Prospects described Khusnutdinov as a player who “plays the full 200 feet of the ice, with one of the best motors in this class. He’ll relentlessly backcheck as play transitions towards the defensive zone, and his ability to track developing plays while he’s skating at full speed impressed us over the year. Khusnutdinov is also proficient at carrying the puck into the offensive zone”.

Marat Khusnutdinov’s NHL Debut to Today

On February 28, 2024, Khusnutdinov signed a two-year, $2.7 million contract with Minnesota and was promoted to the Wild on March 10, 2024. On March 14, 2024, the 5-foot-9, 170-pound wing made his NHL debut against the Anaheim Ducks and played 11:54 of ice time with four blocked shots and two hits. Khusnutdinov scored his first NHL goal against the Vegas Golden Knights on April 12, 2024. The forward finished his first season with 16 games played and one goal with three assists. Khusnutdinov played 75 games with the Wild and scored three goals and eight assists.

On March 6, 2025, Khusnutdinov was traded to the Boston Bruins with forward Jakub Lauko and a sixth-round draft pick for forward Justin Brazeau. Khustnutdinov will be a restricted free agent at the end of the 2024-25 season.
