Sam Gagner On Waivers

Edmonton Oilers forward Sam Gagner was placed on waivers this afternoon. Through 27 games in his 17th NHL season, the 37-year-old centerman has 10 points. He clearly doesn’t suit up for as many games as the other bottom six forwards, but he is offensively and emotionally impactful to the 4th line whenever he has suited up.

Oilers fans dove into full-on panic mode after this news was announced. Could he get claimed? Sure. But Oilers commentator Tom Gazzola pointed out on Twitter that the move was for cap space reasons. It could signal an incoming trade that Ken Holland is trying to make. Even if a team decides to retain the salary of the player coming in, saving $750K is still a pretty decent amount at this time of the year.

We’ll wait and see how much this news holds up.
