San Jose Sharks Claim Ty Emberson

via NHL.com

The San Jose Sharks announced that they claimed former New York Ranger defenseman Ty Emberson. Emberson, 23, spent last year playing with the Hartford Wolfpack in the AHL. He scored seven goals and tallied 20 assists in 69 games last year. Emberson was a former third-round pick of the Arizona Coyotes. Before turning pro, Emberson attended the University of Wisconsin, scoring 34 points in 101 career NCAA games. He was also the Captain during the 2020-21 season.

Emberson was part of a trade between the Coyotes and New York Rangers in the 2022 offseason, as the Rangers looked to dump Patrik Nemeth’s salary while the Coyotes looked to get some quality draft capital back in exchange.

With the Sharks, Emberson should be in the mix out of training camp as General Manager Mike Grier looks to continue his overhaul of the Sharks blueline prospects. Emberson has yet to make his NHL debut and will have an opportunity with San Jose to do that. While Grier continues churning the roster in the Sharks rebuild, they currently have ten defensemen under NHL contracts that would have to clear through waivers if the Sharks wanted to send them down. While the Sharks have yet to send any players through waivers this season, some moves will be needed to get down to the 23-man roster once the regular season approaches. If Emberson doesn’t hit the ground running for the Sharks, could he attempt to go through waivers again and be subject to being snagged by another team?
