Stars Return to Win Column With 5-2 Victory Over Blue Jackets

The Dallas Stars began a brief, three-game road trip against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night. The Stars returned to the win column with a 5-2 win over the Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. Dallas improved to 8-3-1, while Columbus fell to 4-6-3.

The Stars’ starting lineup featured Miro Heiskanen, Tyler Seguin, Ryan Suter, Matt Duchene, Mason Marchment, and Jake Oettinger. Oettinger made 28 saves for a win.

Meanwhile, Blue Jackets goaltender Spencer Martin made 27 saves in a losing effort.

The Blue Jackets wasted no time getting on the board. Boone Jenner fired a wrist shot into the Stars’ net for an early 1-0 lead just 1:08 into the first period. Johnny Gaudreau and Jack Roslovic collected the assists on Jenner’s seventh of the season.

The Blue Jackets doubled their lead nearly midway through the first. Kirill Marchenko fired a wrist shot into the Stars’ net to make it a 2-0 game at 8:43. Adam Fantilli and Dmitri Voronkov collected the assists on Marchenko’s third of the season.

The Stars finally got on the board midway through the first. Mason Marchment fired a wrist shot into the Blue Jackets’ net to cut the lead to 2-1 at 9:29. Matt Duchene and Tyler Seguin collected the assists on Marchment’s third of the season.

The Stars trailed the Blue Jackets 2-1 at the end of the first. Dallas outshot Columbus 12-8 after 20 minutes.

The Stars tied the game midway through the second period. Craig Smith scored on a wrist shot to tie the game 2-2 at 10:20. Radek Faksa and Esa Lindell collected the assists on Smith’s second of the season.

The Stars took their first lead of the game late in the second. Matt Duchene scored on a wrist shot to give the Stars a 3-2 lead at 16:34. Nils Lundkvist collected the lone assist on Duchene’s third of the season and second of the evening.

The Stars led the Blue Jackets 3-2 after two periods. Dallas outshot Columbus 20-18 through 40 minutes.

The Stars doubled their lead early in the third period. Tyler Seguin scored a tip-in goal 3:47 into the third. Nils Lundkvist and Matt Duchene collected the assists on Seguin’s second of the season.

The Stars sealed their scoring late in the third. Jason Robertson scored an empty-net goal on a wrist shot to extend the Stars’ lead to 5-2 at 17:04. Joe Pavelski collected the lone assist on Robertson’s third of the season.

The Stars defeated the Blue Jackets 5-2 after three periods. Dallas outshot Columbus 32-30 after a full 60 minutes.

A Tale of Two Centers
Dallas Stars head coach Pete DeBoer said Wednesday that centers Matt Duchene and Radek Faksa will be game-time decisions on Thursday. Duchene is day-to-day with an upper-body injury after taking an upper-body check on Monday. Faksa is dealing with an upper-body injury and could be placed on injured reserve. And, as of Thursday afternoon, Dallas held an optional morning skate with Duchene and Faksa appearing to be good to go.
