The Presidents’ Trophy will head north of the border for the first time since 2012 as the Winnipeg Jets, regardless of the outcome against the Edmonton Oilers in game 81, will bring home their first franchises Presidents’ Trophy.
The Washington Capitals trailed Winnipeg by five points with three games left to play. This meant that the Capitals could not afford to lose any games or drop any points. After suffering back-to-back losses to the Columbus Blue Jackets, Winnipeg clinched the top seed in the 2024-25 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Jets, who currently sit 55-21-4 on the season pending the result of the game against Edmonton, will be pushing to do more than win the Presidents’ Trophy as they look to play hockey well into June.
Regardless of the supposed Presidents’ Trophy curse, eight teams have won the Stanley Cup when winning the Presidents’ Trophy in the same season.
Heading into the season, many critics and media people alike claimed that the Jets would be in a wildcard spot around this time of the season, but the red hot winning streak to start the season and their overall play put that discourse to rest.
The last team to win the Stanley Cup and Presidents’ Trophy in the same season was the 2013 Chicago Blackhawks. Winnipeg looks to bring the same piece of history to its own building.
All in all, the Winnipeg Jets winning the 2024-25 Presidents’ Trophy for the first time in the history of their franchise is a massive accomplishment and a testament to the hard work put in on and off the ice.
