Broberg, Holloway Both Receive Offer Sheet From St. Louis

On Tuesday, August 13th, the St. Louis Blues presented offer sheets to both Edmonton’s Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. Both players signed the offer sheet and the Oilers have until August 20th to match the offers, keep the restricted free agents, or they’ll receive NHL Draft compensation from St. Louis.

The previous offer sheet that led to a player switching teams had been to Montreal’s forward, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, who signed a one-year contract ($6.1 million) with the Carolina Hurricanes on August 28th, 2021. The Canadiens received both a first-round and third-round pick in the NHL Draft as compensation.

Compensation going to the team that is losing a player to an offer sheet soars from no compensation for a contract that’s worth $1.51 million (or less) per season, to four first-round draft picks for a contract that’s worth more than $11.45 million per season.

Both of these offer sheets are the 11th and 12th given since 1998.

In 1998, Hockey Hall of Famer Sergei Fedorov was offer sheeted by the Carolina Hurricanes for a 6-year, $38 million contract. He played a crucial role in three Red Wings Stanley Cup championships (1997, 1998, and 2002) and he was a six-time NHL All-Star.

Philip Broberg’s two-year $9.16 million contract ($4.58 million average annual value) would call for a second-round pick as compensation… Dylan Holloway’s two-year $4.58 million ($2.9 million average annual value) would call for a third-round pick as compensation.

In 12 regular-season games with the Edmonton Oilers last season, Broberg had two assists and three points (two goals, one assist) in 10 Stanley Cup Playoff games. In 81 regular-season games, the first-round pick (No. 8 at the 2019 NHL Draft) defenseman has a total of 13 points (two goals, 11 assists)… He has a total of three points (two goals, one assist) in 20 playoff games.

In 38 regular-season games with Edmonton last season, Holloway had nine points (six goals, three assists) and seven points (five goals, two assists) playing in all 25 Stanley Cup Playoff games. In 89 regular-season games, the No. 14 pick (2020 NHL Draft) collected a total of 18 points (nine goals, nine assists) and a total of seven points (five goals, two assists) in 26 playoff games.
