ECHL: Jonny Evans Returns to South Carolina Stingrays

Jonny Evans is set to return to the Lowcountry this upcoming season. Evans dressed in 52 games for the Stingrays last season, scoring 16 goals and registering 27 assists. He was able to make an appearance during the post-season play last season after sustaining a long-term injury late in the season. “The Stingrays have been great to me ever since I’ve been here,” said Evans in the team’s press release. “I’m excited to come back and be a part of the winning culture in South Carolina, and I want to help us go as far as we can in the playoffs this year. We have one of the best fanbases in the South, and I’m looking forward to playing in front of them again this season.”

Before his professional career, Evans played with the University of Connecticut for four years, where he registered 79 points in 106 games, and he led Hockey East in scoring in 2021, where he put up 29 points in 23 games. He played with former Stingray Carter Turnbull, who is overseas this season, and Kevin O’Neil, who has signed with the AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears. He will, however, be rejoining members from his former conference, as he is the fourth player from the Hockey East to join the organization for the upcoming season and is the fourth school represented: Boston University, Umass Lowell, and Merrimack College.

This signing does come as a shock to some, as it had been rumored that Evans was in talks to join Turnbull overseas. This is the only professional organization he has ever played for, and he is familiar with the coaching staff and should be taking on a bigger role this season.
