ECHL: Sergei Murashov Called Up To Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have announced that they’ve called up goaltender Sergei Murashov from the Wheeling Nailers. This comes after Joel Blomqvist left Wednesday Night’s vs the Lehigh Valley Phantoms after the second period with an injury. Sergei Murashov is 12-3 with a 2.64 GAA, .913 SV% with one shutout in 16 games at the AHL level. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will roll with a tandem of Murashov and Taylor Gauthier while Blomqvist is out. The fourth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins went 17-7-1 with a 2.40 GAA, .922 SV%, and one shutout in 26 games during the regular season with Wheeling. Murashov started in the first three games of the North Division Semifinals for the Nailers, going 0-3 with a 3.82 GAA and .857 SV%. He’s lost his four starts at the ECHL level. Murashov’s last ECHL win came on February 28th vs Adirondack Thunder.

This is tough news for the Nailers, who already trail 3-0 in the series to the Norfolk Admirals and will face elimination on Friday Night. Wheeling will now turn to Jaxon Castor, who went 6-7 with a 3.65 GAA and .872 SV% in 14 games during the regular season. The 28-year-old goaltender was on the Everblades roster during their 2023 Kelly Cup Championship run, but didn’t see any game action. Castor got his first taste of Kelly Cup Playoff action last season, going 4-3-1 with a 2.73 GAA, .913 SV%, with one shutout in eight games. Wheeling has less than two goaltenders on the roster, so they can sign a goaltender to an ATO (Amateur Try-Out).
