ECHL: Shawn Weller Re-Signs With Thunder For His Final Professional Season

The Adirondack Thunder have announced that they have re-signed Shawn Weller to an ECHL contract for the 2023-24 season, and Weller also announced that the 2023-24 season will be his final year playing professionally. Weller was originally drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the third round of the 2004 NHL Draft and spent two full seasons with the Belleville Senators before signing with Bakersfield for the 2009-10 season. Weller has played in 294 AHL games, putting up 44 goals and 43 assists for 87 points. The 37-year-old winger spent seven seasons playing in Germany from 2013 to 2020 playing the DEL2 league, where he put up 124 goals and 222 assists for 346 points before returning to North America to continue his career, where he signed with Kansas City before getting traded to his home town of Glen Falls, NY during the 2021-22 season.

In 73 games with the Thunder, Weller has put up 14 goals and 18 assists for 32 points, including 14 goals and 13 assists in an injury-shortened season last year in which he played in 52 games. Weller is not only a huge part of the Thunder on the ice but has been known to do a lot for the city of Glens Falls off the ice. Head Coach Pete MacArthur had this to say about the signing, “Shawn Weller is back,” said Head Coach Pete MacArthur. “Shawn was a big piece to the power play last year as our net-front presence, wore a letter on his jersey, and is amazing in the locker room as a leader and veteran of over 700 professional games. Our Community Service Man of The Year last year, we are excited to have Shawn back for the 2023-24 season!”
