Montreal Canadiens Sign Alex Newhook

The Montreal Canadiens have signed Alex Newhook to a four-year deal worth $11.6 million with an AAV of $2.9 per year. Newhook was acquired by the Canadiens on June 27th from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for picks #31 (Mikhail Gulyayev) and #37 (Colorado ended up trading this pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning), along with Gianni Fairbrother. This is a smart deal for the Canadiens as Newhook is coming off his entry-level deal, and at only 22 years old, Newhook brings youth to a Canadiens team that is looking to get younger and rebuild. Montreal also gets help up the middle, which has always seemed to be an issue for the Canadiens. In 159 games with the Avs, Newhook has put up 27 goals and 39 assists for 66 points. He was part of the team’s 2022 Stanley Cup Championship run. Prior to joining the Avalanche, Newhook spent two years at Boston College, where he put up 26 goals and 32 assists for 58 points in 46 games, those numbers were good enough to win him the NCAA Rookie Of The Year Award in 2020.
