Sydney Harris Makes History in the ECHL

Sydney Harris became the first female referee to be in an ECHL game in the Utah Grizzlies vs Kansas City Mavericks game. Harris also refereed in the AHL and the PWHL and was scouted by the ECHL and AHL in August at the NHL Exposure Combine.

Before starting her reffing career, Harris played DIII hockey at Elmira University. The Pueblo, Colorado native played five seasons at Elmira from 2017-22, where she captained in her final two seasons. She played in 126 games at Elmir, where she registered 36 points and 80 penalty minutes.

After completing her collegiate career, Harris was planning on playing professionally with RoKi in Finland. However, due to injury, Harris was not able to play professionally. From there, she got her start in officiating. Harris started in the PWHL before being added to a list for officials in the AHL and ECHL.

Harris had the opportunity to officiate at the Chipotle-USA Hockey Girls Tier I National Championship back in 2022. She also officiated at the 2022 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship, Division I, Group A in Hungary, her first international experience.

Harris also participated in the officiating crew at the NHL Rookie showcase this past summer. Officiating games involving the Nashville Predators, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lighting, and Carolina Hurricanes prospect teams.

After reffing her first game on Friday night, Harris was also back on the ice for the Kansas City vs. Utah game on Saturday night.
