Welcome Aboard: Todd Skirving Named Captain For Newfoundland Growlers

On November 9th, 2023, Forward Todd Skirving was named the second captain in Newfoundland Growler’s history, and deservedly so.

Skirving has played for Newfoundland in all 5 years of the teams existence in the ECHL. This includes the 2018-2019 Kelly Cup Championship. He is a fan favorite in Newfoundland and well respected all over the ECHL. In 5 seasons with the Growlers, Skirving has ranked in the top 5 in franchise history for points at 121, netting 61 goals, and 60 assists. He has played in a total of 202 games for Newfoundland.

Skirving is following the footsteps of James Melindy, who retired last season. Melindy was the inaugural Captain when the team came on the scene in the 2018-2019 season.

“I was informed last week before the road trip that it would be a possibility coming up for this homestand. So i was a little bit aware of it and then in our team meeting, it was brought up with Mel and we had a quick conversation. Mel brought the C over to me and put it on my jersey. It was definitely a special moment. Obviously Meller, the organization is what it is today because of him and the way he led over the past several years. So definitely an honor and privilege.

Before spending the last 5 seasons with Newfoundland, Skirving played for Orlando Solar Bears, Utah Grizzlies, and Atlanta Gladitors. In his time with those 3 teams, he played in a total of 44 games and notched 7 goals and 8 assists. Last season, he received his first call-up to the AHL with the Toronto Marlies and played in 1 game. He attended Marlies Training Camp prior to the Growlers season starting.

Congrats Captain! Can’t wait to see what you do!
