The Grand Rapids Griffins picked up their second win of the season. The Griffins are the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings and feature multiple players from last season’s Red Wings team, in Elmer Soderblom, Austin Czarnik, Jonatan Berggren, Simon Edvinsson, and Marco Kasper. They also feature some top prospects in William Wallinder, Amadeus Lombardi, and Sebastian Cossa. Tonight, for the second night in a row, they played the Colorado Eagles, the AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche, and secured another win 4-1.

Griffins Scoring

The Griffins got the scoring started in the first, with Austin Czarnik scoring his second goal in as many nights, and Nolan Stevens assisted him. Tyler Spezia would add a second goal for the Griffins in the first period, and Tim Gettinger and Dominik Shine would help this one.

In the second period, the Griffins kept things rolling with former Red Wing and future star defenseman Simon Edvinsson finding the back of the net for his first of the year with Taro Hirose and Jonatan Berggren assisting on the Edvinsson goal.

In the third period, the Griffins poured it on with a goal from Tim Gettinger, who scored his first of the year; once again, Jonatan Berggren got an assist, his third assist of the season, and Wyatt Newpower added the secondary assist. The Griffins would get a fifth goal from Newpower, his first of the year, with an assist from Joel L’Esperance.

Griffins Goaltending

Red Wings’ top goalie prospect, Sebastian Cossa, got the start in this one, and he looked great in the first two periods, stopping all 21 shots he saw. In the third period, he lost the shutout, giving up two goals on 21 shots. The Griffins were outshot 21-3 in the third period alone. Cossa finished the game, stopping 40 of the 42 shots he saw, and secured his first win in the AHL this season after last season when he went 1-1-0 with 5.57 GAA and a .783 save percentage.
